Many people (ok, 2) asked in the comments of my last post who or what my sock pal is. Is it me wearing sock puppets on my hands while I type? No. Is it a way for me to get free handknit socks? Hells yes! I have joined Sockapaloooza. Sockapaloooza, as you will learn from the link, is a sock-swap set up by Alison at the blue blog. On Feb. 1st, I received the foot measurements and sock preferences of the person I am to knit socks for and someone received that information about me. Clearly, the vague, "knit whatever", information I provided was insufficient. Here are my answers to the sock pal's inquiry. Oh, and I must say that my sock pal is intriguing me.
1. so. canada. nice. how's the weather?
This question makes me think that my sock pal is not Canadian. I wonder what country s/he lives in. Anyway, dear sock pal, it's true that I live in Canada, in Ontario's capital, Toronto. Toronto has a very mild winter, but a SCORCHING summer that is compounded by the wicked air pollution.
2. stand-up comedy? a girl after my own heart. any other artists you like? any favourite sketches?
Because my sock pal spells favourite with a "u" it makes me think that I may have been wrong about his/her nationality...However, my sock pal could be English. Anyway, I really like Eddie Murphy, Steve Martin and Chris Rock. And of course, Margaret Cho is hilarious. But I think I like our local talent best - Sean Cullen's Burly Man Diet bit is quite funny.
3. any pets? if yes, tell me about them. if no, explain why (yep, i'm all sorts of nosey)
I have one pet. She is a cat/princess named Minchie. I also believe that she speaks French and that is why Costin and I have failed miserably at getting her to use her litter box properly as we have only tried explaining it in English and in tuna. You can learn more about her here.
4. so...do you really like socks?
I really like socks. I am particularly fond of wigwam socks, which I currently wear everyday and have even started wearing for winter running. I only have one pair of handknit socks that I received from the very first sockapalooza. However, I have personally knit 5 pairs of socks in total - 4 pairs for sue and 1 pair for my mom. I am currently knitting myself some Lorna's Laces knee socks in purple and pink. The only time I do not wear socks is in the summer as it would violate the no socks and sandals rule.
5. knitting, mainly for yourself, others, or what? i'm going for a good essay-ish like answer here.
I don't think I can muster up enough for an essay here without making it sound like one of the altruistically-themed "why do you want to be a doctor" responses I had to write up for my med school application (shudder). I knit mainly for others. Specifically, I like to knit for my niece, my other family members, and my friends. However, I try to convert my friends to knitting all the time so that I can focus on knitting for my niece - who is the cutest. I knit the first piece for myself 8 months after learning to knit. I would say it is possible that I don't like knitting for myself at all, but I currently have 4 projects just for me on the needles. However, if I was more into them, they would probably be done by now.
6. so you bike. any other sports/activities?
I used to dance but stopped at 17. I run long distances - I am currently training for my 6th half marathon and will start training for my first full marathon in May. I also like to kayak when I'm at my parent's place or in the Maritimes. While I was completing my undergraduate degree, I played soccer on my college's intramural team. Oh, and I really enjoy lifting weights, especially when I can lift more that the boys.
7. what do you do in your free time? (all the phd/masters kids i know are totally socially inept and can't find a job. you seem to be doing much better than that) how'd you manage it?
I like to read, knit, hang-out, watch TV (especially on DVD with sue), and experiment in the kitchen. It's funny that you made a comment about managing to get a job despite my obvious, graduate induce social awkwardness because my job, in essence, it is just like my grad work, but on the pancreas, not the brain. So, no one around here really notices the social handicap.
8. pain au chocolate. any other weaknesses i should know about?
I love dill pickle chips, cheese, bacon and spicy sausage.
9. what's your favourite season and why?
SPRING is definitely my favourite season. It's like there is this electricity in the air - potential. It gives me the feeling that anything is possible.
10. favourite tv show? (if you don't watch tv. explain that for me)
I like CSI, Law & Order, Gilmore Girls and ER. Recently I started watching Grey's Anatomy. I can't believe how good Sunday's episode was.

I cannot believe that Grey's Anatomy episode either. From that alone I have become a giant fan. I can't wait until this Sunday!

Robin makes lots of neat stuff. She is currently working on sock poodles. Check out her site:

I have finished future granddaughter's yellow cotton sweater and hat--minus the buttons. I am not putting them on til I positively absolutely see she's a girl. Now I am working on those sox I started in May--still on the first one. I just turned the heel. Do you think I will ever really finish them? You are my inspiration!
